Saturday, August 10th - Kigali, Rwanda

Written by Heather Williams, World Dancer

Today was a rare day of rest for us here in Rwanda. We were supposed to travel to Dufatanye co-operative to see their new craft store, but due to its nearness to the possible threat of Ebola, it was decided that we would spend the day in Kigali instead. As sorry as we are to miss meeting the people of Dufatanye and seeing the much-anticipated craft store, it is very nice to have a slight break in our busy schedule as we wind down towards the end of our trip.

Even though we had no big plans today, we still kept ourselves busy. In the morning we went to a large market to do some final shopping for souvenirs that we didn't already get from other markets or from Twiyubake, the craft-making co-op we visited in Kayonza. This market was much, much larger than the one we'd been to before, and much more crowded and hectic. But our previous shopping experiences helped us navigate through the market to find what we wanted at a good price. By the time we were finished, most everyone's hands were full and pockets were empty.

In the afternoon, some of our group went to The Manor Hotel to take a dip in the swimming pool! It was cloudy and the water was cold, but it was very refreshing and relaxing. I had the best chocolate milkshake of my life (mostly because I've been craving chocolate for two weeks), and we all shared some pizza and just hung out poolside with a view of Rwanda's beautiful rolling hills. A great break from the whirlwind of the last couple weeks, and a wonderful moment to be able to reflect on our journey and appreciate this beautiful country before we leave in a few days. I will absolutely be leaving a piece of my heart here in Rwanda when we go.
